Adaptation to Climate Change

Adaptation strategies to climate change are being developed, using a bottom-up approach, aimed at reducing the vulnerability of systems exposed to climate variations, making them more prepared to face the future.

Responses to climate change impacts extend beyond greenhouse gas emissions mitigation and go towards the integration of adaptation into risk management strategies.
Terms like adaptation, risk, uncertainty, resilience and corporate dependency should be included into companies’ policies and addressed within strategic management planning.
This article aims at stimulating private sectors engagement in undertaking these actions. A roadmap, based on the ISO family standards, is proposed and needs to be reviewed and tackled by companies’ top management. There is no need to reinvent the wheel, companies already own management tools (such as corporate risk management, environmental and quality management systems, etc.) whose framework can be used to address climate risks as well.
